Brooklyn failed its first test under interim head coach P.J Carlesimo after losing 104-73 to the San Antonio Spurs Monday night. Spurs guard Tony Parker led all scorers with 20 pts.
The Nets were done in by a lackluster third quarter in which they were outscored 30-5. While it is true that the Spurs are a superior defensive team, Brooklyn has had a difficult time scoring the basketball even against teams who are not as good defensively as San Antonio, i.e., the Los Angeles Lakers, the Golden State Warriors. Need I say more? Brooklyn’s offensive woes in the third quarter can certainly be attributed to the poor play of Deron Williams, who continues to underperform as the team’s marquee player. No matter who’s the coach, Williams must play better if the Nets are going to make a deep run in the postseason this summer.
